Maine Quilt Show 2012 #1

35th Pine Tree Quilt Guild, Inc. presents 35th Annual Show - 

July 27-29 2012

This is a little flavor of the quits shown. 

Margaret Miller, Bremerton, Wa. who travels widely giving lectures and workshops on color and design which encourage students to 'reach for the unexpected' in contemporary quilt-making. 

She spoke at the Gala Friday evening. She was such a delight sharing her stunning work and inspiring us as quilters and her words about giving PEACE to others in various ways.

OUR THEME THIS YEAR WAS "THE POTATO" 

"Maine Potato" by Barbara Duffy, our Pres. (18x26) "I grew up in Waldo Country surrounded by potato farms. There is nothing in this world that compares to a just dug Maine potato!" Source: "Barrel with Gloves"  by Diana Rauch. Machine pieced, machine appliqued., machine embroidered, embellished, machine quilted.

This depicts how glass in churned in the ocean and deposited on the beach by the waves. Original design

 POST CARD - Art Quilts of Maine

The challenge was to choose your favorite place. Have you been there, or do you dream of going? What would you say on your postcard? The challenge was to create a postcard from that place, real or imaginary, in a size proportional to an actual 4x6 postcard 20x30."Glenn Race Course 1970 by Julie Weaver. 

The use of lines of thread was phenomenal. Note the people watching.

 These were done of her children. "Queen of My Heart" by Holly Dominie, Readfield 

Her daughter's hair has always fascinated her. She explored its richness, texture and highlights using Australian fabrics. 

"Irrepressible" was the name of her son's. She was inspired by his favorite color - purple - capturing his irrepressible character. Both sized (28x37)

 These won - Her daughter's won JUDGES CHOICE(pink) and 1ST PLACE (blue ribbons on both. CLOSE UP BELOW.

 This was one of my favorites. Alway think the black is powerful in any quilt and with the touch of aqua it was stunning. 2nd place(red)

"Finally Finished" by Anne Freeman, Hermon . This was her first quilt to show.100x100)

 If you had looked at the quilt below. It was a blob of netting. BUT, when we looked through the lens of a camera we discovered this delightful picture called "HAZEL AT 85"
by Sandra Betts - Saint John NB (21x24) A portrait of her mom as she remembers her. A new technique for her, she used free motion stitching.

"Celestial Circus" done by Maine-ly Sewing - Attendees of the shop hop vote for their favorite. This did not win but I liked the way it was laid out. Everything cut on a slant. They were all this color.

Enjoy just a little bit of our weekend. The guild was founded in 1978 with just over 60 members and today there are 74 chapters across the State of Maine and 2,321 members from Maine and beyond.
